Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. — On Sunday afternoon at McKale Center, Arizona fell to New Mexico, 72-69, marking the Wildcats' second loss of the season. Arizona drops to 6-2 overall.
The Wildcats were led offensively by guard
Noelani Cornfield, who contributed 20 points to go along with seven assists on the day.
Tanyuel Welch had a big day off the bench, scoring a season-high 16 points for the Wildcats. Freshman
Daniah Trammell was the only other Wildcat in double-figure scoring with 13 points off the bench as well.
Offensively, Arizona struggled from the field, shooting 40.7% and 25% from three. They also struggled at the free-throw line, shooting 63% on the day. However, the Wildcats were able to win the battle in the paint for their eighth straight game, outscoring the Lobos 30-28, and also had the advantage off the bench, outscoring the Lobos 32-20 in that area as well.
Defensively, the Wildcats forced 20 turnovers, led by Cornfield, who had five steals on the day.
Nora Francois also contributed three steals of her own which helped the Wildcats score 20 points off turnovers in this one.
New Mexico was led by Alyssa Hargrove, who posted 16 points on 4-9 shooting from three, and was one of three Lobos in double-figures. New Mexico was also able to out-rebound the Wildcats 44-32, which helped them pull away with the victory.
Arizona will look to bounce back on Wednesday, December 10th, at 11 am MST at the McKale Center. The game will be aired live on ESPN+.
