TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Women's Tennis had an outstanding weekend, securing back-to-back wins with a 4-1 victory over Colorado State on Friday and a dominant 7-0 sweep against Buffalo on Saturday.
Saturday morning, the Wildcats started strong in doubles play, securing the point with commanding performances. Belen Nevenhoven and Josie Usereau defeated Victor Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley (CSU) 6-2, while Karissa Ghigiarelli and Zoya Chulak cruised past Mariya Dobreva and Logan Voeks (CSU) 6-1. The third doubles match was left unfinished with Arizona trailing 4-5. In singles, Arizona capitalized on its momentum. Danielle Tuhten posted the first singles victory, defeating Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya (CSU) 6-4, 6-2. Tanvi Narendran followed with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-1 win over Logan Voeks (CSU), and Midori Castillo-Meza clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Victoria Erechtchenko (CSU). Josie Usereau and Stephanie Shogreen's matches were left unfinished, with Usereau leading 6-3, 5-4.
Arizona carried their momentum into Saturday's match against Buffalo, delivering a flawless 7-0 victory. The Wildcats dominated doubles play, securing the point with a 6-0 win from Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo, while Teja Tirunelveli and Zoya Chulak followed with a 6-3 victory. The third match was left unfinished, with Arizona leading 5-3. The Wildcats continued their dominance in singles, sweeping all six matches. Ostrzygalo battled to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Esmee Andresen (BUFF), while Castillo-Meza overpowered Maria Glowacka (BUFF) 6-0, 6-1. Danielle Tuhten, Tanvi Narendran, Stephanie Shogreen, and Karissa Ghigiarelli each added wins, securing the clean sweep for Arizona.
With these two victories, Arizona improves to 8-4 on the season and now shifts its focus to the start of Big 12 play. The Wildcats are set to host No. 74 BYU on Thursday, February 28th at 12:00 p.m. MST, followed by a Saturday matchup against Utah at 12:00 p.m. MST. Arizona last faced BYU in the 2024 season, falling 1-4. The Cats took down Utah 4-2 in their previous meeting last April.
This marks the official kickoff of Big 12 conference play, and the Wildcats are looking to start strong in front of their home crowd. Heading into the next ITA rankings on February 25th, Arizona currently sits at No. 28.
