TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Women's Tennis opened Big 12 conference play with a strong 4-1 victory over the BYU Cougars on Thursday, improving to 9-4 on the season.
The Wildcats set the tone early in doubles play, securing the point with dominant performances. Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven cruised past Grace Levelston and Elizabeth Tullis (BYU) 6-2, while Martyna Ostrzygalo and Zoya Chulak blanked Chelsea Bluestein and Kendall Kovick (BYU) 6-0. The top doubles match featuring Danielle Tuhten and Josie Usereau was left unfinished, with Arizona trailing 3-4.
In singles, Arizona continued to build momentum. Tanvi Narendran posted the first singles victory, sweeping Madison Smith (BYU) 6-0, 6-3. Danielle Tuhten followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chelsea Bluestein (BYU). While Midori Castillo-Meza fell to Bobo Huang (BYU) 3-6, 4-6, Zoya Chulak delivered the clinching point with a hard-fought 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Sue Yan Tan (BYU). Josie Usereau and Martyna Ostrzygalo's matches were left unfinished, with Usereau leading 6-4, 1-6, 4-2 and Ostrzygalo ahead 3-6, 6-3, 4-1.
With this win, Arizona begins Big 12 play on a high note and will look to carry that momentum into its next conference matchup against Utah on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. MST at Robson Tennis Center.
