WACO, Texas. — The No. 30 Arizona Wildcats defeated #13 seed Utah on Thursday night, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship.
Arizona took an early lead by winning the doubles point. The No. 85 duo of Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo defeated Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts of Utah, 6-3. Belen Nevenhoven and Zoya Chulak followed with a 6-3 win against Utah's Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie to clinch the point.
In singles play, No. 95 Midori Castillo-Meza got Arizona on the board early with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Sara Akid. Tanvi Narendran followed with another strong performance, defeating Hayley Roberts 6-3, 6-1 to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Utah responded with a pair of solid wins to even the score. Emma Kamper upset No. 64 Josie Usereau in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(7-3), and Kaila Barksdale delivered a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Martyna Ostrzygalo to keep the Utes in contention. With the match tied 2-2, freshman Zoya Chulak stepped up in a crucial moment. After taking the first set 6-3, she held off a late push from Dylan Lolofie to close out the second in a tiebreak, 7-6(7-3), sealing the win for Arizona and punching the Wildcats' ticket to the quarterfinals.
