PROVO, Utah — A home run from
Mason White and a pair of dominant relief outings helped the Arizona Wildcats (27-11, 11-6) earn a 5-4 victory over the BYU Cougars (19-17, 6-11) on Friday evening at Miller Park.
White's three-run home run, his eighth long ball of the year, put the Wildcats out in front 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Though the Cougars would claw a run back in the bottom of the fifth, the Arizona bullpen held them scoreless through the remainder to lock in the victory.
Starting pitcher
Owen Kramkowski (6-3) earned the win after working five innings for the Cats. The tall right-hander allowed four run and struck out five on 88 pitches before handing the ball over to the pen.
Right-handers
Julian Tonghini and
Tony Pluta covered the final four innings out of the Arizona bullpen and held BYU scoreless on three hits. Tonghini struck out four and Pluta one, while the latter earned his Big 12 best eighth save of the season.
Friday's win sets up a rubber match between the Wildcats and Cougars on Saturday afternoon.
