Arizona Women’s Basketball Adds Versatile Memphis Guard Tanyuel Welch

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Women's Basketball has announced the addition of Tanyuel Welch, a 5-foot-10 guard from the University of Memphis, to the 2025–26 roster. An Indianapolis, Indiana native, Welch brings size, versatility, and two-way impact to the Wildcats' backcourt.

Welch played in all 29 games for Memphis during the 2024–25 season, making 24 starts and averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. She was one of just three players in the American Athletic Conference to average at least 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. A reliable and efficient shooter, Welch connected on 48.3 percent of her three-point attempts on more than two tries per game and finished the season ranked in the top three on her team in points, rebounds, assists, three-pointers made, and minutes played.

Returning to action after redshirting the 2023–24 season due to a torn ACL, Welch made an immediate impact. She opened the year with four steals in her first game back and later delivered a string of standout performances, including a 21-point, nine-rebound effort against East Carolina and a 21-point, 10-rebound, six-assist outing against UAB. Against No. 18 Tennessee, she scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She also dished out a career-high seven assists in a win over Ball State.

As a freshman in 2022–23, Welch played in all 33 games and averaged 13 minutes per contest. She scored in double figures four times, highlighted by a 17-point performance at SIUE and an 11-rebound game at Temple.

Before her college career, Welch was a decorated player at North Central High School in Indianapolis. She scored over 1,000 points during her prep career and earned First Team All-State honors, while also being named to the Indiana All-Star Team and the Supreme 15 All-State Team. A 2022 Miss Indiana Basketball candidate, she led North Central to two Marion County Championships and two Indiana Sectional titles while averaging 17.3 points per game on 46 percent shooting, including 36 percent from beyond the arc.
