Erin Tack breaks a program record in javelin and
Antonia Sanchez Nunez runs away from field in 400m hurdles to highlight Day 1 of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Wildcats men's team posted six points to sit in 8th in the standings, and the women's team recorded 10 points to tie for 6th after day one of action in the Big 12 Championships at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas.
Zach Landa etched his name in the Arizona record books after finishing 8th in the men's hammer throw to begin the day, he became the first Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field point scorer in program history.
Jesse Avina unleashed a final throw of 66.92m (219-7) to capture fourth place in the men's javelin. He matched his fourth-place finish in the event at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships last season.
Antonia Sanchez Nunez won her heat of the 400m hurdles by a large margin, with a time of 56.53 to advance to the final at 5:15 p.m. MST on Saturday. Sanchez Nunez was the only first-place finisher for the Wildcats today.
Yan Vazquez finished 7th with a season-best time, 50.87, in the 400m hurdles to advance to Saturday's final. Vazquez will be back in competition at 4:05 p.m. MST on Saturday, May 17.
McKenna Watson finished 5th (23.23) and
Jade Brown finished 7th (23.28) to qualify for the 200m final on Saturday. Watson and Brown will be back in action on Saturday, May 17, at 5:35 p.m. MST.
