TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona women's soccer battled through tough conditions Thursday night, knocking off UCF 1-0 at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
The lone goal came in the 43rd minute when sophomore forward Aurora Gaines buried a penalty kick to give the Wildcats the lead. The score marked Gaines' fourth goal of the season, moving her into sole possession of the team lead.
Arizona's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Olivia Ramey, kept the Knights off the board for 90 minutes. Ramey tallied two saves on the night to secure her sixth win of the year, while the back line limited UCF to just three shots on frame.
The Wildcats controlled much of the match, generating six corner kicks compared to the Knights' one, and maintained composure even as weather turned chaotic late. In the final 10 minutes of the second half, lightning strikes and a downpour rolled into Tucson, but Arizona held strong to protect its advantage and close out their fourth shutout of the season.
With the win, Arizona improved to 6-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Big 12 play, while UCF fell to 6-2-1 and 0-1-1 in league action.
