Cary, N.C. – Arizona Women's Tennis competed across prequalifying, singles main draw and doubles this week at the NCAA Championships, highlighted by the program's first-ever main draw appearance.
Prequalifying action got underway Saturday morning, where the Wildcats battled through three tough singles matches. Tanvi Narendran pushed Emmie Moore (Utah) to three sets before falling 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1. At the same time, No. 122 Martyna Ostrzygalo fought hard against Mckenna Schaefbauer (Illinois), ultimately dropping a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 decision. Maria Garcia rounded out the morning, taking Maria de la Paz Alberto (Iowa State) to the edge in both sets before falling 7-6(4), 6-4.
History was made in the main draw, where No. 51 Josie Usereau became the first Wildcat in program history to compete. She showed resilience on Wednesday morning, storming back from a first-set loss to defeat No. 50 Gracie Epps (Oklahoma State) 0-6, 6-1, 7-6(5). Usereau's run came to an end Thursday in the Round of 32 against No. 106 Savannah Dada-Mascoll (Appalachian State) 6-1, 6-4.
Usereau and Ostrzygalo then teamed up in doubles to etch another first in program history — the first Arizona women's pair to compete in the main draw. The duo made their debut count with a thrilling upset of Pepperdine's 21st-ranked Alexia Harmon and Anastasiia Grechkina, 6-4, 6-4. Their run ended Thursday against No. 10 Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe (NC State) 6-1, 6-7(3), 10-2.
The Wildcats now turn their focus to the USC Invite in Los Angeles, Oct. 3–5.
