TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team fell to UConn Sunday in the series finale, dropping an 11-2 decision to the Huskies.
The Wildcats recorded a season-high 12 hits; however, they were only able to produce two runs throughout the contest, as they left 13 runners stranded.
UConn tallied 12 hits of their own and the Huskies' starting pitcher Oliver Pudvar earned the win on the mound.
Tony Lira continued his exceptional play to start the season, going 2-4 at the plate with a walk, a single, and the first home run of his career.
Beau Sylvester also had a strong performance, going 2-4 with an RBI. Freshmen Caleb Danzeisen and Cash Brennan tallied two hits apiece, and Danzeisen also drew a walk, reaching base three times in the game.
UConn scored one run in the first and two in the second, taking a 3-0 lead through two innings. The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the third and another in the fourth, as they built a 6-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Arizona scored one run after Sylvester singled to bring Andrew Cain home, trimming the UConn lead down to 6-1.
The Huskies scored another run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead; but, Lira hit a 452-foot home run to right-center field in the bottom half of the inning, and the Wildcats trailed 7-2 entering the sixth frame.
UConn plated one run in the eighth and three in the ninth to secure the win over Arizona.
