TUCSON, Ariz.– Arizona opened the day at the Cactus Classic with a 5-0 sweep over UTEP before falling 0-5 to Arizona State in its second match.

The Wildcats started strong against UTEP, earning straight-set wins on four courts.

Stephanie Rondon and Adri Nieves Papaleo earned the first point with a dominant 21-6, 21-11 win.

Ashlyn Zilliken and Madeline Walker cruised to a 21-11, 21-9 victory to earn the second point.

Sadie Moore and Brooke Boyko also handled business in straight sets, 21-14, 21-8 to earn the third point for the cats.

Sophia Winter and Jamie Streit secured another point winning the first two sets both 21-15.

Regan Holmer and Carlie Cisneros battled in a tightly contested three-set match to complete the sweep. After winning the first set 21-13, the pair dropped the third set to UTEP in a 30-32 second set before closing it out 15-12 in the third.

Arizona carried that momentum into its second match against Arizona State but came up short, dropping the dual 0-5 despite 4 of the courts going to three sets.

Holmer and Cisneros pushed their match to three sets, falling 14-21, 21-17, 12-15.

 Zilliken and Walker also forced a third set before losing 13-21, 21-14, 13-15.

Rondon and Nieves Papaleo split the first two sets, 19-21 and 21-16, but were edged 11-15 in the third.

Moore and Boyko dropped a three-set battle as well, 21-12, 18-21, 12-15.

Winter and Streit competed in a tight two-set contest on their court, falling 20-22, 25-27.

Arizona will look to bounce back tomorrow against Oregon and Georgia State as  tournament play continues this weekend.
