TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team fell to New Mexico 6-3 on Saturday night.
The Wildcats (7-13, 1-2) had eight hits and five walks, while the Lobos (13-7, 1-2) recorded 11 hits and three walks.
New Mexico pitcher Samuel Jackson was credited with the win, while Collin McKinney was charged with the loss for Arizona.
Offensively, Caleb Danzeisen and Nate Novitske led the Wildcats with two hits apiece. Danzeisen also drew a walk to reach base a team-high three times.
Arizona's pitching staff struck out 13 and was bolstered by a strong relief outing from true freshman Benton Hickman, who tossed three perfect innings without allowing a baserunner.
New Mexico struck first in the contest, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Arizona responded quickly, as they added three runs in the second inning to move in front. Maddox Mihalakis opened the inning by doubling down to right field. Roman Meyers then smoked a single through the left side of the field, plating Mihalakis. Danzeisen followed with a single of his own and Meyers advanced to second. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Mathis Meurant put a ground ball in play that scored Meyers. Danzeisen then scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat, as the Wildcats took a 3-1 advantage.
The Lobos answered with four runs in the third to reclaim the lead and added another in the fifth to extend it to 6-3.
Arizona was unable to score for the remainder of the contest, as they fell to the Lobos.
The Wildcats return to Hi Corbett Field on Friday to open a three-game series against Texas Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
