Arizona Falls 2-1 Despite Kramkowski’s Dominant Performance

TUCSON, Ariz. - Owen Kramkowski tossed a season-high 7.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out six; however, the Arizona baseball team fell 2-1 in a late-inning heartbreaker to Kansas State on Friday night.

Arizona (14-23, 5-11) recorded six hits and four walks, leaving eight runners stranded, while Kansas State (24-14, 8-8) had seven hits and one walk.

Garrett Hicks was charged with the loss on the mound, while Miles Smith collected the win for Kansas State.

Kramkowski was sensational for the second consecutive outing, holding a potent Kansas State to six hits over 7.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Andrew Cain led the way for the Wildcats with his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Beau Sylvester extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a hit-by-pitch. Nate Novitske was 1-for-3 with a walk, and Caleb Danzeisen walked twice.

Both teams went scoreless across the first five and a half innings, as Kramkowski dueled against Kansas State starting pitcher James Guyette.

Arizona broke through in the bottom of the sixth, as Cain opened the inning by singling to right field. After a fly out, Sylvester lined a triple to the wall in right-center field, plating Cain and putting Arizona ahead 1-0.

Kansas State responded in the top of the eighth, scoring on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom half of the frame, Cain once again delivered as the leadoff hitter, blasting a triple off the wall in right field. Following a strike out, Cain was thrown out at the plate attempting to steal home in a pivotal moment in the contest.

Kansas State pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, taking their first lead of the game.

Arizona went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning, as Kansas State held on for the 2-1 win.

Arizona returns to Hi Corbett Field on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (MST) for the second game of the series against Kansas State.
