TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona baseball player Smith Bailey was named the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week following a 15-strikeout performance against Kansas State on Saturday, the organization announced Tuesday.
Bailey put together a masterful outing on Saturday night, allowing just one hit across 6.0 innings, while striking out 15 batters. He finished one strikeout shy of matching the program record for strikeouts in a conference game.
He etched his name into the Arizona Baseball record books, as he became the first Arizona pitcher in over 15 years to record 15 strikeouts in a game.
The sophomore struck out 15 of the 21 batters he faced, including a stretch of seven consecutive punchouts during the game.
Bailey was also named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, and garnered a spot on Baseball America's National Team of the Week following his sensational performance.
Bailey and the Wildcats will turn their attention to BYU, as they are scheduled to face the Cougars in a three-game series at Hi Corbett Field, beginning on Thursday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. (MST).
