Fladda Deals as Wildcats Roll Past BYU, 6-0

TUCSON, Ariz. - Luc Fladda pitched 6.2 scoreless innings and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts, and the University of Arizona baseball team produced six runs on 10 hits, as they secured an impressive 6-0 victory Thursday night to open the series against BYU.

Fladda earned the victory on the mound for the Wildcats (16-24, 7-12), while Wayland Crane was charged with the loss for BYU (20-20, 9-10)

Arizona received a dominant outing from Fladda, while Corey Kling allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings to secure the shutout. The duo combined for 13 strikeouts and limited BYU to seven hits. It marked just the third time this season the Cougars were held scoreless.

Offensively, Beau Sylvester and TJ Adams set the tone for Arizona, each producing two hits and two RBI. Nate Novitske and Caleb Danzeisen added one hit and one RBI apiece, and all nine starters reached base at least once.

Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings as Fladda and Crane each started strong. Fladda settled in during the fourth, retiring the side while striking out two, sparking a stretch in which he retired nine consecutive batters, including six strikeouts.

Arizona opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, as Danzeisen walked to lead off the inning. After two outs, Andrew Cain singled to center field and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Sylvester followed with a single to right field to plate two runs and give Arizona a 2-0 lead, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth, with Carson McEntire leading off the inning with a double. Cash Brennan was then hit by a pitch to put two on, and both runners advanced on an errant pickoff attempt. Danzeisen delivered an RBI single to right field, and Novitske followed with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, Sylvester led off with a single down the left field line before advancing to second on a groundout by Maddox Mihalakis. McEntire then drew a walk, and Brennan reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with two outs. After Brennan stole second, Adams lined a 2-2 pitch into left field to drive in both runners and make it 6-0.

After Fladda recorded two outs in the seventh, Kling entered and pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Arizona and BYU return to Hi Corbett Field on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for the second game of the series.
