Wildcats Drop Series Finale to BYU, 8-4

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team dropped the series finale to BYU, falling 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.
Smith Bailey was charged with the loss for the Wildcats (16-26. 7-14), while Cayson Bell earned the win for BYU (22-10, 11-10).
Mathis Meurant led the way offensively for Arizona, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Maddox Mihalakis matched a season-high with three hits, going 3-for-5 on the day. Beau Sylvester recorded a hit, extending his current streak to 13 consecutive games.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never trailed, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles and a wild pitch to take control of the game.
BYU added another run in the third, again capitalizing on a wild pitch, before extending its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as Mathis Meurant doubled down the right field line before Caleb Danzeisen launched a two-run home run to deep center field to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Cougars responded with two runs in the sixth, using a hit batter and consecutive bases-loaded walks to push the lead to 7-2.
The Wildcats answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Beau Sylvester worked a leadoff walk and later came around to score on an RBI single from Meurant to make it 7-3.
Arizona continued to chip away in the eighth, with Maddox Mihalakis and Jackson Forbes recording back-to-back singles before Meurant lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and trim the deficit to 7-4.
BYU added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Wildcats will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they travel to face Grand Canyon at 7:00 p.m. (MST).
