Wildcats Open Four-Game Road Swing at Grand Canyon

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team is set to open a four-game road stretch Tuesday night at Grand Canyon.

First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be available for viewing on the Mountain West Network.

LEADING OFF:

  • The Arizona Wildcats open a four-game road stretch at Grand Canyon on Tuesday night.

  • The Wildcats and Antelopes have met 105 times previously, including twice this season, with the Wildcats holding a 72-33 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams split the first two matchups of the season, with GCU picking up a 7-5 win (3/3), before Arizona earned a 5-4 victory (3/24).

  • Beau Sylvester extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games on Saturday, and is batting .392 with an on-base percentage of .446 over the stretch.

  • Luc Fladda was named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing 6.2 scoreless innings, and allowing six hits while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts to help lead Arizona to a 6-0 shutout win over BYU on Thursday.

  • Tony Lira continues to pace the Arizona offense, as he leads the team in batting average (.351), hits (60), doubles (13), slugging percentage (.515), and on-base percentage (.434), while ranking tied for first in extra-base hits (18), and second in runs (25).

  • True freshman Caleb Danzeisen leads the team with 31 walks this season, while ranking second in on-base percentage (.411), and he has reached base in 29 of 32 games this season. 

  • Seniors Mathis Meurant and Maddox Mihalakis combined to go 5-8 with two runs scored and two RBI in the series final against BYU on Saturday.

SOME GAME THEMES: The Arizona Wildcats and Grand Canyon Antelopes meet for the third time this season and 105th time throughout histroy…Arizona and GCU have faced off two times previously this season, splitting the seasons series…Grand Canyon won the first contest, pulling out a 7-5 victory after scoring three runs in the top of the ninth...Arizona bounced back to win the second contest, building an early lead to earn a 5-4 victory over the Lopes...Arizona is coming off a difficult weekend, in which they earned a 6-0 shutout victory over BYU on Thursday night, before dropping back-to-back contests to the Cougars to lose the series...The Wildcats will aim to secure a victory on Tuesday night to build momentum ahead of a challenging three-game road series at No. 11 Kansas this weekend.

FLADDA AND BAILEY GO BACK-TO-BACK: Luc Fladda and Smith Bailey collected Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks, with Fladda earning the award on Monday, while Bailey was honored with the award last Monday. Fladda had  a superb performance in which he was dominant from start to finish, limiting BYU to no runs and just six hits, while fanning 11 batters and issuing zero walks, as he helped lead Arizona to an impressive 6-0 shutout victory over the Cougars. Fladda retired 11 consecutive batters with six strikeouts during a stretch from the third to seventh innings. Bailey had arguably the best performance of his career last Saturday night against Kansas State. The right-hander tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out 15 batters. He became the first Arizona pitcher to record 15 strikeouts in over 15 years and he was just one strikeout shy of matching the program record for most strikeouts in a conference game. Bailey garnered a multitude of recognition for his performance, as he was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, and was named to Baseball America's National Team of the Week.

LIRA LEADING THE WAY: Just as he has done all season long, redshirt-freshman Tony Lira continues to lead the way for Arizona offensively. Lira leads the Wildcats in a multitude of offensive categories, including OPS (.949), batting average (.351), hits (60), doubles (13), on-base percentage (.434), slugging percentage (.515), while extra-base hits (18), and second in runs (25). Lira has recorded a hit in 26 of the past 31 games, and he has collected at least one hit in 32 of 42 contests this season. He has put together 21 multi-hit performances, and he is batting an exceptional .438 with runners in scoring position this season (14-32). In addition to his stellar play at the plate, Lira has also been a vital piece defensively for Arizona, starting all 39 games at first base for the Wildcats

SYLVESTER STREAKING: Senior Beau Sylvester has continued to elevate his play as the season has gone on, and he is playing arguably the best baseball of his career as of late. Sylvester enters the contest against GCU on a 13-game hitting streak, marking the longest streak by an Arizona player this season. Sylvester has reached base safely in all 29 games that he has started this season, and he has recorded a hit in 25 of 29 contests for the Wildcats. Sylvester's batting average has ascended to the third best mark on the team (.322), and he is also third in on-base percentage (.386), and tied for third in doubles (8). Over his current 10-game hitting streak, he is batting .410 with three doubles, a triple, and a home run.

FABULOUS FRESHMEN: Arizona has had five separate freshmen start 19 or more games this season, and they have continued to make a noteworthy impact. Redshirt freshmen Tony Lira and Nate Novitske and true freshmen Caleb Danzeisen have led Arizona offensively all season, and Lira and Novitske rank first and third on the team in batting average, respectively, while Danzeisen is second in on-base percentage (.411). Redshirt freshman Jackson Forbes has started 25 games he is tied for fourth on the team in RBI (21). True freshman Cash Brennan is coming off a weekend in which he started two games and went a combined 2-6 at the plate with three runs scored.
