TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona freshman
Ivan Kharchenkov has announced that he will be returning to play for the Wildcats in 2026-27 after a highly successful first season in Tucson. In the starting lineup from the beginning, Kharchenkov was one of the most consistent contributors for the Wildcats throughout the season and during the run to the Final Four.
One of the best perimeter defenders in the country, Kharchenkov finished the season with 53 steals, which is sixth-most by an Arizona freshman and ranked 11
th in the Big 12 among all players.
But his impact was also felt on the offensive end as part of the Wildcats balanced attack. He started all 39 games and averaged 10.4 points per game, scoring in double figures 26 times during the season. He shot 49.2% from the floor overall and 72.3% at the free throw line while grabbing 4.3 rebounds per contest.
Kharchenkov was one of four freshmen in the country to have at least 400 points, 80 assists, 50 steals and 10 blocked shots, joining Cameron Boozer (Duke), Kingston Flemings (Houston) and Nigel James Jr., (Marquette).
Called one of the best "Glue Guys" in the country by members of the media, Arizona's offensive efficiency with Kharchenkov on the court was 123.0 while opponents only scored 98.9 points per 100 possessions when Kharchenkov was on the court last year.
With Kharchenkov's return coupled with
Motiejus Krivas announcing yesterday that he will be back with the Wildcats in 2026-27, head coach
Tommy Lloyd will have two of the best defenders in the country back in the fold as the foundation for another strong defensive team.
