Arizona Men Finish Runner-Up, Women Take Third in Historic Big 12 Championship Weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Track & Field completed the 2026 Big 12 Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Drachman Stadium.

The weekend was highlighted by conference titles from Mason Lawyer, Jett Kinder, Tyler Michelini, Tapenisa Havea, and Sydnie Vanek. Lawyer swept the men's 100m and 200m titles with times of 9.93 and 20.02, Kinder won the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 70.02m, Michelini won the men's shot put with a throw of 19.91m, Havea captured the women's shot put title with a mark of 16.11m, and Vanek claimed the women's long jump title with a leap of 6.50m.

The Wildcats delivered a historic performance across the three-day championship meet, recording multiple school records, a Big 12 record, several all-time top-10 program marks, and numerous personal bests. Lawyer's 20.02 in the men's 200m broke the school, facility, and Big 12 records while ranking No. 4 in the NCAA and among the top-20 times in the world this season. Arizona also broke school records in both the men's and women's 4x100m relays, while McKenna Watson shattered a 24-year-old school record in the women's 200m prelims.

Overall, the men finished second with 101 points for their highest conference finish since 2011 and most conference championship points scored since 2006, while the women finished third with 79 points for their highest conference finish since 2013. The combined finishes marked the first time since 2012 that both Arizona programs finished inside the top three at a conference outdoor championship meet.

FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Jett Kinder won the men's javelin title with a personal-best throw of 70.02m to earn 10 points for the Wildcats.

Tyler Michelini captured the men's shot put title with a throw of 19.91m while teammate Sam Hala'Ufia finished runner-up with a mark of 19.26m to complete a 1-2 finish for Arizona. Michelini also scored in the hammer throw with a fifth-place personal-best mark of 63.68m, while Michael Ogbeiwi placed seventh with a throw of 60.15m.

Tapenisa Havea won the women's shot put title with a throw of 16.11m and later added another medal in the discus throw with a fifth-place mark of 52.92m. Haedyn Bambolo also scored in the women's shot put with a fifth-place finish and throw of 15.56m.

Sydnie Vanek earned the Big 12 title in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.50m.

Arizona totaled three scorers in the women's javelin with Erin Tack placing second at 52.81m, Aislin Martinez finishing sixth at 47.40m, and Emily Psarras placing seventh.

Antone Smith earned bronze in the men's triple jump with a school-record leap of 16.94m.

The Wildcats swept places second through fourth in the women's high jump. Emma Gates and Kya Crooke tied for second with clearances of 1.85m while Paris Mikinski finished fourth with a personal-best clearance of 1.85m.

TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

The men's 4x100m relay team of Mason Lawyer, John Paredes, Parker Duskin, and James Onanubosi broke the school record with a time of 38.62 while finishing runner-up in the event.

The women's 4x100m relay team of Brooke Lyons, Hollan Powers, Taylen Wise, and McKenna Watson broke the school record with a time of 43.77 while placing third overall.

Mason Lawyer won the men's 100m title with a wind-aided 9.93, the fastest all-conditions mark in Big 12 history and the fastest time ever run by a Wildcat in the event. James Onanubosi added points with a seventh-place finish and season-best 10.19.

Lawyer later won the men's 200m title in a school-record, facility-record, and Big 12-record time of 20.02. The mark ranks No. 4 in the NCAA and among the top-20 times in the world this season. Lawyer became the first Arizona athlete since Michael Bates in 1991 to sweep the conference 100m and 200m titles at an outdoor championship meet.

Lawyer was also named the Big 12 Men's High Point Performer of the Meet after totaling 28 points across the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay.

Lawi Ngetich earned bronze in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:59.27.

John Paredes placed third in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 13.47 while Parker Duskin finished sixth in 13.65.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Taylen Wise placed fourth with a lifetime-best 13.09 to move to No. 4 all-time in program history while Hollan Powers finished fifth with a personal-best 13.10 to move to No. 5 all-time in program history.

McKenna Watson broke a 24-year-old school record in the women's 200m prelims with a time of 22.90 before finishing sixth in the final with a time of 23.12. Watson also placed eighth in the women's 100m with a wind-aided season-best 11.33.

Yan Vazquez finished fourth in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 50.10.

Evans Tanui earned points in both distance events, placing seventh in the men's 10000m and fifth in the men's 5000m with a time of 13:53.93.
