TUCSON - Arizona football head coach
Rich Rodriguez has announced the promotion of
Matt Caponi to safeties coach and the addition of
Andrew Warsaw as an operations assistant.
Caponi will serve as Arizona's assistant coach charged with overseeing the safeties. He was a defensive graduate assistant at UA during the 2012 season after being hired by Rodriguez in December 2011. Prior to his arrival in Tucson, he was a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh in 2011 and was the defensive coordinator at Washington and Jefferson College for three seasons (2008-10).
He worked with linebackers in 2010 and was in charge of the secondary from 2006-09 at W&J. He got his start in coaching in 2004 as a student assistant at his alma mater, Mount Union College, and was Mount Union's JV coordinator and linebackers coach in 2005.
Caponi was a team captain and starting safety at Mount Union, earning all-conference second-team honors as a senior in 2003. MUC went 55-1 during his four years including three Division III national titles. He earned a degree in physical education in 2005.
Andrew Warsaw joins the Arizona football staff as an operations assistant. He comes to Tucson after stints at Fordham, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Penn and Villanova.
He spent the 2012 season at Fordham and served as the director of operations. For the 2011 campaign, he served as the director of operations and recruiting coordinator at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Warsaw served as the assistant director of football operations at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010, helping the Quakers to the 2010 Ivy League title. Warsaw served as an intern at Villanova in 2009 as the Wildcats won the NCAA FCS National Championship that season.
A 2009 graduate of the West Virginia, Warsaw served as a student manager for four years as an undergraduate. He helped with preparations for two bowl game appearances by the Mountaineers, the 2008 Fiesta Bowl and the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl.
