SEATTLE (AP) - Kristen O'Neill scored with less than 2 seconds left to lift
Washington over No. 18 Arizona 60-59 Saturday night.
Giuliana Mendiola's shot hit the rim, but O'Neill put back the rebound for
the lead. Arizona's Aimee Gryzb launched a desperation shot as time expired,
but it fell short.
Gryzb and Dee Dee Wheeler each missed free throws in the final 30 seconds
which could have sealed the win. The Huskies were down by as many as 11 points
in the second half, but fought back behind O'Neill's team-high 17 points.
Shawntinice Polk had a game-high 20 points in the losing effort.
Giuliana Mendiola finished with 14 points and Andrea Lalum had 10 for the
Huskies.
Establishing an inside-outside game early, the Wildcats used 3-pointers by
Grzyb and post play by Polk to build a lead. Washington countered down the
stretch preventing Polk from getting the ball and strong play from Mendiola.
Arizona led at the half 38-27 as Polk had 12 points and helped the Wildcats
hold Washington scoreless the final 4:11 of the half.
