LOS ANGELES - Ranked No. 2/2 nationally and the top seed in the Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament, the Stanford Cardinal ended the Wildcats' five-game winning streak with their 21st-straight win, 100-71, in the semifinals at the Staples Center. Arizona moves to 21-11 overall this season as Stanford advances to 28-2.
"We have to give credit to Stanford," head coach Niya Butts said. "They played an awesome game and you can't say enough about their efficiency. I'm proud of our team and I'm proud of our effort. We had a great run but we ran into a buzz saw today. I'm proud of what we did throughout this tournament. Now it's a wait and see game for us and hopefully we've done enough to get into the NCAA Tournament."
Senior forward Soana Lucet paced Arizona with 17 points on 7-of-12 from the field. She also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Sophomore guard Davellyn Whyte was 2-of-5 from three-point range and ended the game with 12 points. Senior forward Ify Ibekwe chipped in with 15 points and junior guard Brooke Jackson led the Cats at the glass with five boards.
For the game, Arizona shot 39.3 percent from the field (24-61), 47.4 percent from behind the three-point arc (9-19) and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (14-18) compared to Stanford's 58.7 percent (44-75), 30.8 percent (4-13) and 66.7 percent (8-12). The Cardinal out-rebounded the Cats, 41-29.
Stanford took to the locker room with a 45-24 lead over Arizona. For the half, the Cardinal shot 52.6 percent (20-36) from the field to the Wildcats' 28.1 percent (9-32). Stanford also out-rebounded UA, 26-16. The Cats did shoot 50 percent from the behind the three-point arc with 5-of-10, including 2-of-3 from Whyte.
Arizona's starting line-up included junior guard Shanita Arnold, senior forward Ify Ibekwe, junior guard Brooke Jackson, senior forward Soana Lucet, and sophomore guard Davellyn Whyte. Freshman Erica Barnes had the most minutes of the bench with 20. She had eight points and six rebounds.
For Stanford, Nnemkadi Ogwumike was their leading scorer with 32 points. Chiney Ogwumike chipped in with 21 points and led at the glass with 13 boards.
Arizona will learn its next postseason location on selection Monday, March 14.
