Coach Butts

Junior Kama Griffitts (Couer D'Alene, Idaho) scored 25 points to lead Arizona women's basketball past UNLV, 83-82, in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Griffitts shot 7-for-13 from behind the arc for her highest point total so far this season.

Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) was also solid for the Wildcats with 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Whyte showed leadership and poise in the last six minutes of the game, hitting 5-of-6 free throws to seal the win for Arizona.

Several additional Wildcats stepped up, including juniors Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.), Alli Gloyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Carissa Crutchfield (Ft. Gibson, Okla.), who all added eight points. Barnes also had six rebounds.

Overall, the Wildcats forced 23 turnovers and turned them into 33 points, outrebounded UNLV 36 to 34 and shot 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line.

“UNLV came out and played well—they shot the ball really well,” Arizona head coach Niya Butts said. “We did a better job of taking care of the basketball tonight. I think that really helped us and we were able to get the win.”

The teams played evenly in the first half, but the Rebels shot 65.5 percent from the field to the Wildcats' 42.4 percent. Griffits was 4-of-7 from the arc in the first half for 12 points.

In the second half, UNLV cooled off, but Arizona took charge with 7:42 remaining, going on a 15-3 run to gain an 80-73 edge. The Rebels would not quit, scoring five points in 59 seconds, but the Wildcats stepped up their defense and escaped, 83-82.

Kelli Thompson led UNLV with 25 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Arizona will return to McKale Center to host Cal State Northridge at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.
