The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team claimed their second win of the weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack. The win marks the seventh victory over the Wolf Pack in nine meetings.
The Cats fell behind early at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, dropping the doubles point. Arizona came back strong in singles play, winning five matches to start the season at 2-0.
In doubles play, Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson teamed up to take on Moez Echargui and Quentin Mege on court two. Shinde and Thompson claimed the first game but Echargui and Mege earned the next two to take the lead. The Arizona duo claimed the next three games to reclaim the lead at 4-2. The Nevada team clinched the next game before Shinde and Thompson earned another victory, extending their lead to 6-3. Nevada won the next two games but those would be their last as Shinde and Thompson claimed the next two and clinched the match, 8-5.
On court three, Naoki Takeda and Andre Vidaller played Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie. The teams traded wins tying the match at one and two. The Arizona duo fell behind as Allan and Poustie claimed two straight. Taked and Vidaller stopped the run, winning the next game, but the Nevada team won two more to bring the match to 6-3 in their favor. Takeda and Vidaller answered with the next four victories to tie the match at 6 and take the lead at 7-6. The Nevada team fought back and tied the match at seven and the court entered a tiebreaker. The Wildcat duo fell behind early, dropping the first four points. The Cats claimed the next point and the teams traded wins to bring the match to 6-2 in Nevada's favor. Takeda and Vidaller earned the next three points but Allan and Poustie answered with one more win to claim the victory 7-5.
Last to finish was the team of Fredrik Ask and Giacomo Miccini on court one. The junior duo battled Nevada's Victory Ouvard and Fernando Sunago. The teams traded wins to tie the match at one and two before Ouvard and Sunago began to pull ahead, winning three straight. The Arizona duo claimed the next game but Nevada clinched the next to, brining the match to 7-3. Ask and Miccini fought back and claimed the next four games to tie the match at seven and force the tiebreaker. The Arizona team dropped the first two points but fought back to tie it up at two. The teams traded wins tying again at three and four. Ask and Miccini claimed two straight to take the lead, 6-4, but the Nevada team fought back to tie it up at 6. The Wildcat team clinched the next point and yet again Nevada fought back to tie it up. The Arizona duo took the lead one last time at 8-7 before Nevada answered with three straight points to claim the tiebreaker 8-10. The loss marked the second for the Cats and the doubles point went to the Wolf Pack.
In singles action, Takeda was first to finish in his match against Allan on court five. The freshman from Osoka, Japan fell behind early, dropping the first three games. Takeda claimed the next game and the two traded wins to bring the match to 5-2 in Allan's favor. Allan earned the next win to claim the set, 6-2. In the second set, Takeda started off slow once again dropping the first three games. He claimed a win before allowing one more to Allan. Takeda then started a roll, winning three straight to tie the set at four all. Allan won the next game to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Takeda claimed on more win before Allen earned two to edge Takeda, 7-5.
With the Wolf Pack up 2-0 all five remaining singles matches entered third sets.
On court one, Vidaller was second to finish in his defeat of Ouvard. In the first set, the two swapped wins with Vidaller, a junior from Santos, Brazil, remaining one-step ahead until he clinched two straight games to earn the first set, 6-3. Ouvard fought back in the second set and Vidaller was unable to secure a win. In the third set, Ouvard claimed the first game but Vidaller battled back to clinch the next two. Vidaller held Ouvard to two more wins as he claimed the set, 6-3, earning the Cats their first point of the day.
Shinde dominated the first set against Mege on court six. The sophomore from Pune, India claimed the set, 6-0. In the second set, the two traded wins to bring the match to 3-2 in Mege's favor. Mege clinched the next three games to win the set, 6-3. Shinde clinched the first game of the third set and the two traded wins brining the match to 3-2 in Shinde's favor. Shinde earned the next three games to clinch the set, 6-2. The win marked the second for the Wildcats and tied the overall match at two points each.
On court three, Miccini was next to finish in his match against Sunago. The Recanati, Italy native dominated the first set, winning 6-0. In the second set, he clinched the first two games before Sunago answered with a win. Miccini rebounded to win the next game but Sunago fought back to win the next two and tie the set at three. The two swapped wins to tie again at four before Sunago claimed two straight to clinch the set, 6-4. In the third set, Miccini fell behind, 1-0 but fought back to claim the next win. Miccini and Sunago traded wins to bring the match to 3-2 in Miccini's favor. Miccini claimed the next game to extend his lead to two games before Sunago answered with another win. Sunago clinched the next game to tie the set at four but the win would mark his last as Miccini fought back to clinch the next two games and the set, 6-4. The win marked the third point for the Wildcats who took their first overall lead of the day.
Next to finish was Thompson on court four. Thompson dropped the first game to Poustie but fought back to claim four straight and take the lead 4-1. The two traded wins to bring the set to 5-2 with Thompson still out in front. Poustie clinched to straight to come within one game of Thompson but the junior from Brisbane, Australia answered with a win to clinch the set, 6-4. In the second set, Thompson and Poustie swapped wins to tie at one and two before Thompson pulled away and took the lead 4-2. Poustie then won four straight to clinch the set, 6-4. In the third set, Thompson won the first two games before Poustie fought back to tie it at two. Thompson battled back to dominate the next four games and clinch the set, 6-2. The win marked the fourth point for the Wildcats and clinched the match in their favor.
Finishing shortly after Thompson was Ask on court two. The junior from Oslo, Norway claimed the first game against Echargui but dropped the next two. Ask rebounded and won the next two games to bring the match to 3-2 in his favor. Echargui then tied the set at three but Ask clinched the next game. The two swapped wins, bringing the set to 5-4 in favor of Ask who won the next game to earn the set, 6-4. In the second set, Ask and Echargui traded wins to tie the set at three. Echargui claimed the next game to take the lead at 4-3. Ask would win one more game before Echargui claimed the set, 6-4. The match entered a third set where the two fought a battle of ties. Ask clinched the first game but Chargui claimed the next two. Ask fought back to tie the set at two, he then earned the next game to take the lead at 3-2. Echargui earned the next two games to tie the set at three and take the lead at 4-3. Ask earned the next win before Echargui took the lead at 5-4. Ask fought back again to tie the set at five but once again Echargui took the lead at 6-5. As battled back to tie the set one last time at six games all. The court entered a tiebreaker where Ask dominated the competition to clinch the tiebreaker 7-0. The win marked the fifth and final overall point of the day as the Cats claimed the win 5-2.
With the win Arizona improves to 2-0 while Nevada falls to 2-1.
The Cats will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 as they host New Mexico State. The match is set to begin at noon at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
