TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team posted a season high 196.075 in the second home meet of the season. The University of Utah won the meet with a 196.600.
The Cats opened the meet with a set of consistent scores across the board. Juniors Shana Sangston, Barbara Donaldson, Jordan Williams and senior Aubree Cristello all began the evening with scores of 9.775. Sophomore Allie Flores earned the team high 9.800 to wrap up a total 48.900.
"To be honest we expected a little bit more out of vault. When your last score is the same as your first it isn't your ideal situation. It's something we are conscious about, but it's only January so I know we can improve," head coach Bill Ryden said.
Arizona picked up the pace on bars, posting a season best 49.150 - over a half a point better on the event than the week before.
"The bar team continues to impress. There is a lot of pressure on them, but they've taken the challenge and they wear that mantle with pride. They approach the event with a `this is us, and we're going to do it' kind of attitude," Ryden said.
Flores started the lineup with a 9.825 - the third highest score of the meet, and Williams followed with a career high 9.800 to tie teammate sophomore Danielle Buchanan. Senior Molly Quirk then tied for second place with a 9.850, and Cristello tied for first with a 9.875.
On beam Williams led off to tie sophomore Amber Wobma with two more scores of 9.775 and Flores followed with a 9.750. The seniors dominated the event for the Wildcats, with Cristello posting a 9.850 for second place overall, and Quirk earning a 9.825 for third.
"The beam team is starting to settle in. Even though we had some wobbles and bobbles, we are far more confident than we were the beginning of this month. We have far more depth, and we are going in the right direction - you can see it," Ryden said.
The Cats solidified the season high on floor, where the team totaled a 49.050. Flores and Quirk posted yet another set of 9.775's, marking the seventh and eighth appearance of the score for the evening. Sophomores Kristin Klarenbach and Sangston posted twin scores of 9.825, and Williams took third in the meet with a 9.850.
In the all-around, Williams completed her first complete meet for a career high 39.200 to take third place.
"I'm so happy for Jordan. It makes a huge difference for the team, and it shows what kind of quality athlete she is; this is Jordan's first complete meet and she makes us better. Tonight just goes to show that if Jordan hits her four events it's a good thing for us," Ryden said.
Cristello earned the second place title with a 39.250, and Flores posted a 39.150.
"I'm glad that the team is getting better. I'm really glad that we still have such a huge upswing for the rest of this season. Though I'm happy we set a new season high, we still nickled and dimed ourselves with deductions so we can still get better from here," Ryden said.
Next week the Cats travel to Seattle, Washington to face yet another conference opponent. The team will take on the Washington Huskies Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
