The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team clinched their sixth win of the season with a 7-0 victory over the UC Riverside Highlanders. The teams met at Tucson's Reffkin Tennis Center on Sunday.
The day began with doubles play where the Cats claimed two matches and left one unfinished.
First to finish was the team of Matt Dunn and Kieren Thompson on court two. The Wildcat duo dominated play against Julian Ruffin and Calvin Ngo as they claimed four games before Ruffin and Ngo earned a win. Dunn and Thompson won three more games, brining the match to 7-1 before Ruffin and Ngo earned another win. The win would mark the last for the Highlander team as Dunn and Thompson claimed the next game and the match, 8-2.
On court one, Giacomo Miccini and Mario Urquidi were next to finish in their match against Jimmy Roberts and Simon Peters. The junior duo dropped the first game but battled back to earn the next seven straight and bring the match to 7-1. Roberts and Simon answered with the next two wins before Miccini and Urquidi won their eighth game to win the match, 8-3.
Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda teamed up to take on Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra on court two. The teams tied at one, two and three games all before Shinde and Takeda won two straight to take the 5-3 lead. Griffin and Vizcarra answered with the next win but Shinde and Takeda fought back to claim the next game and bring the match to 6-4. Griffin and Vizcarra claimed one more win before the match was called with the doubles point clinched.
With the doubles point in favor of the Wildcats the teams began singles play where Arizona clinched all six matches in straight sets.
First to finish was Urquidi on court five. The junior from El Paso, Texas won the first four games against Ngo who then came back to win the next game. Urquidi answered with the next win and allowed one more to Ngo before claiming his sixth win and the set, 6-2. In the second set, the two traded wins but Urquidi maintained a 4-2 lead. He then clinched the next two games to win the set, 6-2.
On court four Takeda wrapped up shortly after Urquidi. Takeda claimed the first two games over Griffin who came back to win the next game. Takeda answered with the next two wins to bring the set to 4-1 before Griffin secured another win. Takeda reclaimed momentum, winning the next game but dropped a third game to Griffin. Takeda claimed the next game to earn the set, 6-3. In the second set, Takeda fell behind 1-0 but came back quickly to win the next two. Griffin answered with the next win but it would be his last as Takeda clinched four straight to win the set, 6-2.
Finishing third was Miccini on court one. The Recanati, Italy native dropped the first game to Roberts but gained momentum and clinched the next four straight. Roberts won the next game but Miccini answered with his fifth win. Roberts came back to claim two straight before Miccini clinched another win to earn the set, 6-4. In the second set, Miccini dominated play, claiming four straight before allowing a win to Roberts. The win would be last for Roberts and Miccini won the next two games to clinch the set and the match, 6-1. The win marked the fourth point for the Wildcats and clinched the match in their favor.
On court three, Shinde wrapped up next as he took on Ruffin. In the first set, the two traded wins to bring the set to 4-2 in Shinde's favor. Ruffin claimed the next win but Shinde answered with his fifth victory. Ruffin claimed one more win before Shinde clinched the set, 6-4. Shinde dominated the second set, holding Ruffin to only one win as he clinched the set, 6-1.
In his first match of the spring season, Dunn took on Vizcarra on court six. The two fought a close first set, as Dunn remained one game ahead at 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3 before Vizcarra tied it at four. The Tucson local answered with two straight victories to clinch the set, 6-4. In the second set, Dunn earned a 2-1 lead when Vizcarra came back to tie it at two. Dunn dropped the next three games as Vizcarra claimed the 5-2 lead. Dunn battled back to win five straight and claim the set and the match, 7-5.
Shortly after, on court two, Thompson wrapped up a close match against Luis Gastao. In the first set, Thompson fell behind 2-0 but fought back to win three straight and take the 3-2 lead. The two traded wins before the Brisbane, Australia native claimed to straight to bring the set to 5-3. Gastao earned one more game before Thompson clinched the set, 6-4. In the second set, Thompson fell behind 2-1 before claiming three straight to take the 4-2 lead. Gastao answered with the next win but it would be his last as Thompson earned the next two to clinch the set and the match, 6-3. The match marked the sixth win for the Wildcats and completed a perfect day for the team.
With the win Arizona improves to 6-2 while UC Riverside falls to 2-7.
The Cats will head back to LaNelle Robson Tennis center as they prepare to host the Cal Poly Mustangs Friday at 12 p.m.
