Takeda Scores Upset as Cats Dominate on Friday

TUCSON, Ariz.--- Junior Naoki Takeda secured Arizona's biggest win of the fall season thus far, as he pulled off a stunning 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinals upset of top-seeded and No. 87 ranked Arturs Kazijevs (SMU), Friday on day one of the Jack Kramer Club Invitational in Los Angeles, California.

The win marks the highest ranked victory of any Wildcat so far this fall, as Takeda improved to 8-2 in overall singles play this season. He also earned a dominating 6-3, 6-1 over UC Irvine's Rafael Davidian in round of 16 action. Arizona went a combined 6-1 in singles play on Friday.

Takeda continued to stay hot in doubles play, as he teamed up with freshman Shoki Kasahara to take down UC Irvine's tandem of Justin Agbayani and Johnathan Poon 8-7 in consolation action.

Junior Jason Jaruvang and freshman David Mushayev both represented Arizona at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic in Florida, and were nothing short of dominant on day one, as the two combined to go a perfect 4-0 in singles play.

Jaruvang (6-3) picked up consecutive wins over Princeston's Mohamed ElTonbari (6-1, 6-3) and Michigan's Kevin Wong (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) to reach Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Mushayev followed suit, collecting his first two wins of the season, as he put together a dominating 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory over North Carolina's Conner Daly, before grinding out a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast's Lucas Vaz to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals.

Jaruvang and Mushayev also teamed up to earn a doubles victory before falling in the round of 16.

Arizona will get back after it on Saturday with three of four Cats still in contention for singles tournament championships.
