TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Briar Preston and sophomore Lauren Marker led the 34th ranked Wildcats (1-0) today, as they defeated the New Mexico State Aggies (0-1) 7-0, Saturday at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
“The team did a great job today,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “New Mexico State was a feisty opponent and we needed to play tough to get the wins. The girls handled themselves well and got it done.”
The Cats got off to a hot start by dominating the doubles portion of the match. Marker/Inge Hendrikx defeated Alcaraz/Castillo 6-1 and Laura Oldham/Devin Chypyha defeated Van Der Ben/Joyce 6-2 on courts two and three respectively to claim the doubles point.
The Preston/Shayne Austin match was unfinished due to Arizona clinching the point before their match could finish.
Arizona stayed consistent as they won all six of their singles matches. Marker defeated 122nd ranked Shrivastava 6-1, 6-4, Preston defeated Kaur 6-0, 6-2, Oldham defeated Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, Austin defeated Van Der Ben 6-4, 6-0, Hendrikx defeated Castillo Lopez 7-5, 6-2 and Chypyha defeated Brandt 6-3, 6-3.
“It was a great start to the year,” Preston said. “Everyone was looking forward to it and we got the job done. Everyone competed really well and made the most of each point.”
The Wildcats are back in action next Saturday, as they go up against Northern Arizona at 10 a.m. at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
