Jones Pours in Career-High 30, as Cats Hold Off Ducks in OT

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.--- Freshman guard Charise Holloway knocked down what proved to be the game-winning three pointer from the left corner with eight seconds left to play in overtime, while sophomore forward LaBrittney Jones came off the bench and went for a career-high 30 points, as Arizona hung on to defeat Oregon, 81-78 in overtime, Sunday afternoon at McKale Center.

For Jones, the game marked arguably the best performance of her collegiate career, as the 30 points nearly doubled her previous career high of 16 points, as she connected on 10-of-16 shots from the field. She recorded a career-high equaling three blocks for a second consecutive night, while pulling down nine rebounds in the win.

Senior guard Candice Warthen notched her third double-double of the season and the fourth of her career, as she poured in 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, while recording a couple of steals on the afternoon.  The performance marks her 14th double-figure scoring game of the season, while she's led Arizona in rebounding on seven different occasions this season.

Warthen moved up on UA's all-time scoring list for the second consecutive outing, as she's now No. 18 on the list (997) and just three points shy of tying Melissa Handley for 17th and reaching the 1,000-point plateau for her career.

Sophomore guard Malena Washington recorded 10 points and five rebounds for her fifth double-figure scoring game of the season, while Holloway contributed eight rebounds and five rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench, including the all-important game winning trey in the closing seconds.

Arizona (8-11, 1-7 Pac-12) received a season-high 44 points from its bench, as opposed to Oregon's (8-11, 1-7 Pac-12) 29 points from its reserves. The Arizona bench has accounted for 45 percent of its total points over its last seven games.

The Wildcats were dominant down low all day, as they pulled down a season-high 53 rebounds to Oregon's 48, while they also won the second-chance point battle 27-20.

Arizona scored 16 points off of 13 forced turnovers, while the Ducks had just 11 and only forced 11 UA miscues. The Wildcats also held a 14-9 advantage in fast break points, improving to 6-2 on the season when they win that category.

In a game that featured 16 lead changes and 14 ties, this one had the makings of a thriller right from the very beginning.

Oregon took the first big swing, as it claimed a 15-10 lead with 10:05 remaining in the first half after Lexi Bando knocked down a trey, but Arizona immediately responded with a mini 5-0 run to knot things back up at 15-15.

The Ducks then pushed their lead back out to 30-22 with 2:14 left to play in the half, as they threatened to pull away heading into halftime, but once again the Cats refused to to back down, closing the period on a mini 7-2 surge to make it a 32-29 Oregon lead at the intermission.

Alli Gloyd set a positive tone for the second half, scoring five of Arizona's first six points out of the locker room, eventually leading to the Wildcats' first lead of the second half at 37-35 with 16:06 remaining.

Washington drained a triple and then Jones converted on a free throw shortly after to spot the Cats their largest lead of the afternoon at 63-54 with 4:49 remaining, but the contest was far from over, as Oregon climbed all the way back to force overtime.

But it was the LaBrittney Jones show in the extra session, as she scored seven of Arizona's 12 points in overtime, including knocking down a critical jumper from the right elbow with one second left on the shot clock to give the Cats a crucial 76-74 lead with 1:11 left to go.

Jones scored again on the very next possession, which eventually led to Holloway's heroic three point conversion.

Oregon had the final shot of the game, but couldn't convert on what would have been a game-tying three pointer as time expired. Arizona's .279 three-point defense was ranked second in the conference and 25th in the nation coming into the game.

The Wildcats will try and string together back-to-back conference victories now, as they'll head to Salt Lake City to take on Utah next Friday at 7 pm MST. The game can be heard locally on KTUC 1400 AM.

Game Notes: LaBrittney Jones's 30-point performance were the most points any Wildcat had scored since Davellyn White scored 31 on Feb. 19, 2013 vs. Arizona State…Arizona snapped what was a two-game losing skid to Oregon…Cats have won five of their last six home games against Oregon…Arizona picked up first Pac-12 win today, snapping what was a season-long seven-game losing streak…81 points scored today were the most amount of points the Wildcats have scored since putting up 86 on Feb. 10, 2013 at California…also marked most points scored at home since scoring 86 on Dec. 20, 2012 vs. Longwood.

ARIZONA POSTGAME QUOTES

Head Coach- Niya Butts

Opening Statement
“I want to give credit to Oregon and knocking down 11 threes. Above all else I have to commend our team though. I am proud of them for the way they competed. As a team we competed well and made plays down the stretch. We made shots down the stretch. I thought we gave up so many offensive rebounds which is why I think they came back. Our shot making in the second half is really what put us over the top. LaBrittney Jones was an absolute animal out there today, on the boards, scoring the basketball, knocking down free-throws. Also, Candice Warthen I thought was good for us today. Charise Holloway hit a huge shot in the corner for us when it really counted. Brianna Workman I think set the tone for us defensively to start the game in the first half with her ability to go out there and create fouls for the other team.”

On Charise Holloway's confidence to shoot the game-winning three pointer
She is a confident young lady, in terms of her ability. If she is confident about it, she'll shoot that three point ball. We know she will let it fly even when we don't want her to let it fly. She has guts and that is certainly something we need and that is why she was in the game there at the end because I know she has the ability to make big plays.”

On being able to take care of the basketball
Our last two games, we have taken really good care of the ball for the most part. I thought  11 turnovers for our group today was pretty good, considering one person had four of those turnovers. Our bench was productive, we had 44 points off the bench, so that's always good. We did a pretty good job all around today and that's why we came out with the win.

On getting first Pac-12 win
Knowing you can win and doing it are two different things. We needed to get this win today. To actually get over the hump and get it done; I think it's a springboard for more to come

On LaBrittney Jones' performance
“I think it is as good of a game she has played in a while. I joked with her before coming in here and I told her, you could probably put your two best games together that you have played since you've been at Arizona and they probably wouldn't be as good as the game you had today. And I wanted to remind her she hasn't played that way since she started coming off the bench. I like her aggressiveness as she comes into the game off the bench, and what she brings to us. She was unbelievable today, unbelievable. I would like to say she was feeling it today.

On Candice Warthen now just being three points away from 1,000 for her career
“I didn't know she was three points away. We'll make sure to post her up in the next game, and try to get her a quick two points there (laughing). She has battled through some things injury wise and the fact that she continues to go and works as hard as she works is amazing. I am proud of her and hoping she can get that 1,000th really quick in the next game.

Senior Guard- Candice Warthen
On her offensive effectiveness on Sunday
"It was a matter of confidence. I haven't really been myself lately and we have been struggling as a group so it was a point of focus today for me to come out confident in my shot and knowing what I'm capable of."

On getting the first Pac-12 win of the year
"It feels amazing!"

On the way the team rallied after losing the lead down the stretch
"It's always really good to see your team fight together as a team for what they want. It was a great team win and it always feels good when you are playing in a close and big game like this."

On where the energy game from this game:
"The energy was everywhere. We all were all talking with each other about how bad we needed to win this game. We just knew we had to win this game today. We came in with a winner's mindset refusing to lose. Energy came from everyone today and we found a way to pull it through at the end."

On Charise Holloway's performance:
"She is very confident player and person. She's a shooter and shooters don't stop shooting. Charise jacks up five threes a game if she has to, but she is a gamer and I wasn't surprised at all."

Sophomore Forward- LaBrittney Jones
On her overall performance
"I think I played well and my teammates had a lot to do with that. I was just letting the game come to me and I knocked down the open shots that I needed to."

On blocked shots she picked up
"I was trying to help over rotation because my teammates are always telling me to get the block if I am at the basket so I was trying to do whatever I had to do to help my team win today."

Freshman Guard- Charise Holloway
On her confidence when taking shots:
"Even though my shots were not dropping, my teammates were the ones who brought my confidence back and without them I wouldn't have been able to do it. My team needed me today so I did what I had to do."
