SAN DIEGO, Calif.--- The Arizona women's tennis team will have three singles players and two doubles teams competing in the round of 32 tomorrow during the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament after a going 7-1 on Thursday.
“The team had a great first day here,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “I felt we competed well even when we were down on some courts. Camila had the only loss for the day, but she played so well and fought so hard it didn't feel like a loss. Bottom line, we are starting to put things together and are coming along nicely.”
No. 42 and third-seeded Junior Lauren Marker advanced on a bye in the singles round of 128 before taking down SDSU sophomore Jana Buth (6-4, 6-2) in the second round.
Freshmen Kinga Gartner bested USC freshmen Kristen Venter (6-0, 6-1) before beating GCU junior Alexandra Petrzalkova (6-3, 6-1), and is one of three Wildcats playing in the round of 32 tomorrow.
Senior Shayne Austin was 2-0 on the day after taking down Pepperdine senior Michaela Capannolo (6-2, 7-6) before a comeback victory over University of Hawaii senior Paulina Petriskova ( 2-6, 7-6, 6-2). Freshman Camila Wesbrooks won her first doubles match of the day against Freshman Sophia Helgstrand, but fell in a competitive match against Pepperdine junior Jean Runglerdkriangkrai.
With the fifth seeded doubles team of Austin and Marker advancing on a bye in the first round, Wesbrooks and Gartner were the only Wildcat doubles tandem on Thursday. The duo bested GCU's Petrzalkova and Waschuk by a score of 8-4.
Day two will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with doubles competition followed by singles play at 12:45 at the San Diego State's Aztec Athletic Center.
