TUCSON, Ariz.--- The final day of the Wildcat Invitational at El Conquistador Country Club ended on a high note for the Cats, as the team wrapped up Sunday afternoon with an overall record of 6-4 which included an impressive singles record of 5-2.
“I think we showed a lot of resilience today in singles,” assistant coach Marco Matteucci said. “Being able to win matches in the third set on the last day of a tournament shows we are on track and competing. In doubles we need to keep getting out of our comfort zone in order to improve. It's a process, and we need to keep being challenged to improve on a daily basis. If we do that, the results will take care of themselves.”
Sophia Thomas and Inge Hendrikx won their doubles match against New Mexico's Elena Arnaudova and Chloe Jolliff by a score of 8-3.
Freshman Camila Wesbrooks won her match in three sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-0) against UTSA senior Jacobea Junger, bringing her overall record in the tournament to 3-1.
Kinga Gartner and Devin Chypyha both won their blue draw matches in three sets. Gartner took down Utah State sophomore Sabrina Demerath (1-6, 7-5, 6-4), and Chypyha defeated senior Jordan Denesik from NAU (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). Gartner and Chypyha both ended the tournament with a 3-1 overall record.
The white draw saw Hendrikx beat Utah State sophomore Maggie O'Meara in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-3), while Samantha Czarniak bested Ekaterina Tugarinova, also from Utah State, by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Hendrikx and Czarniak are two of six Cats to finish with an overall record of 3-1.
No. 43 Lauren Marker will be making her fall season debut later this week as she heads up to Los Angeles to compete in the Riviera All- American Championships beginning on Tuesday.
