TUCSON, Ariz – The three remaining Wildcats in the second round of prequalifying matches fought hard today at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. but ultimately fell short on Sunday.
“It was a challenging day result wise,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “We are growing as a team and these matches will definitely benefit us in the long run.”
After winning his first match in prequalifying action, Junior Oliver Plaskett fell in the second round to Jorge Escuita from the University of New Mexico by a final score of 6-2, 6-2. Plaskett has had a strong overall start to the season so far and hopes to continue his tough play moving forward.
Trent Botha was the next Wildcat up. Botha, also coming off a strong start to the season, won his first round match handily in straight sets. Botha was able to put up a fight, but was eventually defeated by Vasco Valverde from the University of San Francisco 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Jason Jaruvang was the final Wildcat to play on Sunday. Jaruvang, who was off to an impressive 9-0 overall start to the season in singles and doubles play was hoping to extend his winning streak. Jaruvang dropped the first set 6-1 to Michael Feucht from Lamar, but was able to regroup and capture the second set 6-4. Both players battled, but Feucht took the third set 6-3 to win the match by a final tally of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Senior Naoki Takeda continues to prepare to play in the main draw of the All-American Championships beginning on Thursday Oct. 8 in Tulsa, Okla.
