LOS ANGELES, Calif/ LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla.---The Wildcats had a dominating second day at the Jack Kramer Club Classic in Los Angeles, Calif., as they went undefeated on Friday, while the second group of Cats wrapped up day one of the Dicky V Clay Court Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
“Going 4-0 on the day at a tournament with this much talent is a great feeling,” said assistant coach Arron Spencer. “The guys started doubles with the right energy and did a great job of carrying that into the singles. There are some adjustments we need to make before we fire it back up tomorrow, but we will regroup tonight and be ready for another day tomorrow.”
No. 37 Naoki Takeda and Shoki Kasahara started the Jack Kramer Club Invitational on a strong note, as they won their doubles match against University of Washington's Joao Barra and Kawika Lam, 8-7 (4).
The Cats kept their positive momentum going, as both Takeda and Kasahara went undefeated in singles play as well. Takeda easily took down USC's Jake DeVine, 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 and then defeated UCSB'S Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Takeda will advance to the semifinals tomorrow after doubles play.
Kasahara defeated Cal Poly's Lucas Lesoeur, 6-2, 6-2 in the second consolation round. Kasahara will advance to the third consolation round tomorrow after doubles play.
Oliver Plaskett and Will Adkisson fought hard on the first day of the Dicky V Clay Court Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., but went a combined 2-3 on the day.
“I thought today was a great learning experience for Will,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.” It was a great way for him to end the fall playing this level of competition. As for Ollie, he wasn't feeling well all day, gritted through his first match but nothing left in the tank for his second match.”
Plaskett and Adkisson fought hard in doubles play but took a loss against FGCU's Sam Chaffin and Christopher Perrigan, 8-5.
Despite the doubles loss, Adkisson and Plaskett dominated their first round of singles play. Adkisson defeated Furman's Josh Pistorius, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 32. Plaskett defeated Furman's Christopher Perrigan, 6-3, 7-6 (4), in the round of 32.
The Cats went on to the round of 16 but unfortunately fell short. Adkisson was defeated by Louisville's Alex Gornet, 6-2, 6-1. Plaskett was defeated by Princeton's Benjamin Tso, 6-4, 6-1.
Both tournaments will resume tomorrow with action beginning at 9 am MST.
