LOS ANGELES – Wildcat senior Naoki Takeda capped off an impressive 5-0 run at the Jack Kramer Club Classic on Sunday, as he grinded out a dramatic three-set victory over USC's Thibault Forget to capture the singles tournament championship out in Los Angeles.
“A huge congrats to Naoki for winning this tournament,” said assistant coach Arron Spencer. “He lost in the semis last year and has had his sights set on coming back to take the title this year. It is great to see all of his hard work pay off. Overall, it was a good weekend. A lot of things that we have worked on throughout the fall were put into play. I am excited to get back to Tucson and start preparing for the spring season.”
No. 37 Takeda pushed USC's Thibault Forget to three sets, eventually beating Thibault, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Takeda went 5-0 on the tournament and now wraps up the fall campaign with an impressive 8-2 mark, which will certainly bode well for him when the new individual rankings are released in January.
Shoki Kasahara fought hard in the consolation round, pushing his match against Washington's Kawika Lam to three sets, but fell short, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Wildcats now look ahead to the spring slate, as they'll open up the season on Jan. 15 vs. New Mexico on Lubbock, Texas.
