LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Arizona wrapped up day one of the Jack Kramer Invitational Tournament in Los Angeles, ending Thursday with a 4-6 overall record against some very tough competition. Freshman Camila Wesbrooks, sophomore Devin Chyphya, and junior Lauren Marker will be playing in the singles round of 32 tomorrow after Wesbrooks defeated Washington's Miki Kobayashi 6-3, 3-2 (WR), Chyphya defeated Kristine Kouyoumjian 6-3, 6-1, and No. 43 Marker defeated Cal State Fullerton's Sarah Nuno 5-2.
“I felt we did a good job today,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “Our doubles were a little shaky but we did a good job recovering in singles. Even though we lost a few matches, we played close and had our chances. Playing no- ad scoring can really turn a match around quickly, so we need to become more comfortable with that format. Overall, we got a lot of good tennis in and are looking forward to getting more play tomorrow.”
Junior Samantha Czarniak, the only wildcat not to get a first round bye, dropped two sets to Long Beach State junior Laura Eales, 4-6, 3-6 in the singles round of 128. Freshman Kinga Gartner fell to Oregon's Kennan Johnson in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 4-10 during the singles round of 64. Senior Shayne Austin dropped her singles match to Ohio State's Sandy Niehaus 5-7, 5-7 in the round of 64 as did senior Inge Hendrikx, who lost to Rana Ahmed from Fresno State 6-7, 6-7.
All three Wildcat teams received a bye during the doubles round of 64. The tandem of Czarniak and Hendrikx will be playing in the round of 16 after defeating LMU's Ellie Grossman and Kristine Kouyoumjian 8-5. Fresno State's sister duo of Maiar and Rana Ahmed defeated Chyphya and Gartner by a score of 6-8 while Marker and Wesbrooks fell to UC Irvine's Taylor LeFridge and Arisha Ladhani 8-5.
