Wildcats Dominate Early, But Can't Secure Win at Oregon

Box Score

EUGENE, Ore.---The Wildcats received 30 points from their bench and scored 34 points in the paint, but it wasn't quite enough, as Arizona fell to Oregon, 75-61, Friday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.

Sophomore forward LaBrittney Jones scored in double-figures for the fifth time over the last seven games, as she poured in a team-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor, while grabbing five rebounds.

Junior guard Keyahndra Cannon came just a bucket shy of equaling her career high, as she scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, while dishing out two assists in 31 minutes off the bench.

Senior forward Alli Gloyd nearly captured her second double-double of the season, as she recorded eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while shooting 4-of-7 from the floor.

Arizona (9-15, 2-11 Pac-12) won nearly all of the hustle categories on Friday, winning the battle in the paint (34-20), points off of turnover category (17-6), second-chance point battle (15-10), while it scored more fast break points (6-5) and points off the bench (30-20).

The Wildcats have now boasted 16 double-digit scorers off the bench this season, including having at least one double-figure contributor in eight of their last nine contests. Arizona reserves have accounted for 42 percent of its total points over its last 10 games.

UA also won the turnover battle, as it committed a season-low equaling seven turnovers, while forcing the Ducks into 14.

The Wildcats couldn't have asked for a better start, as they jumped out to an 11-19 lead with 11:39 remaining in the first half, after Dejza James converted on a tip-in. In fact, Arizona never trailed until the 3:16 mark of the first half.

UA went into the halftime locker room within striking distance, as it trailed just 34-27.

However, Oregon (12-12, 5-8 Pac-12) caught fire in the second half, building its lead to as high as 56-35 with 13:47 remaining.

But, as Arizona has done most of the season, it responded with an offensive surge of its own. The Cats rattled off a 16-4 run to make it just a 60-51 deficit with 7:11 left to play, after Cannon converted on a layup in traffic.

The Wildcats continued to hang around for the remainder of the game, but couldn't quite climb over the hump, eventually dropping the contest.

Arizona will get back after it on Sunday, as they'll head to Corvallis to take on the No. 8/9 Oregon State Beavers at noon MST. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks and can be heard locally on KTUC 1400 AM.
