SAN DIEGO – The 37th ranked Arizona Wildcats women's tennis team finished off their road trip to San Diego on Saturday by defeating San Diego 6-1.
“I'm very proud of the team,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We really struggled yesterday and it felt great to bounce back from that and get the tough win on the road. Our girls didn't sync in the doubles again but we did such a good job of starting off singles right and battling through the first sets. It changed all the momentum in our favor and allowed us to get a convincing win.”
In doubles, Shayne Austin and Briar Preston were defeated by San Diego's Oppinger/Spinosa 6-1, but Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha responded well by defeating Morkel-Brink/Naslund 6-2. Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrikx lost their match against Stojanovic/Blecher 6-4, which gave San Diego the doubles point.
The Wildcats dominated single competition as they won all six of the matches. Marker continued her success by defeating Stojanovic 7-5, 6-3. This is Marker's eighth straight win on the year. Preston defeated Oppinger 6-3, 6-1; Oldham beat Blecher 6-4, 6-0; Austin won against Spinosa 2-6, 6-0, 6-2; Chypyha defeated Naslund 6-0, 6-0 (her sixth straight win); and Hendrikx beat Marsh 6-0, 6-0.
Arizona is back in action on Friday, Feb. 27 as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on UNLV and then Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Feb. 28.
