LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The 68th ranked Arizona women's tennis team defeated the UNLV Rebels 6-1 on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.
“I'm happy with our results today,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We came out strong in doubles and got the team point by executing our basics well on all courts. In singles, we battled well and were able to close out quickly. It's always challenging to adjust to court speed and altitude on the road, so we're happy to get this convincing win.”
Arizona clinched the doubles point with ease after the duo of Briar Preston and Shayne Austin defeated UNLV's Ferenzci/Lopez 6-2, while Inge Hendrikx and Lauren Marker defeated Artiga/Shumilina 6-4. Oldham and Chypyha's match was not completed, but the two were winning their match 5-4. Hendrikx/Marker earned their team high fifth doubles win of the season.
The Wildcats dominated the singles portion of the match from the get go. It was just another day at the office for 115th ranked Marker as she defeated Shumilina in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. This victory was her seventh straight win of the season and she improved her record to 7-0 at the top spot in the lineup. Briar Preston stumbled in her first set by losing 1-6 to Ferenczi, but she came storming back to win her next two sets 6-2 and 6-1. Preston now has a record of 6-1 at the second spot in the lineup.
Austin earned her fourth victory of the year by defeating Artiga in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Chypyha continued her success in her freshman campaign by winning her seventh match of the season against Lopez in dominating fashion 6-0, 6-1. Chypyha has won all of her singles matches this year while winning five at the sixth spot and two at the fifth spot in the lineup. Hendrikx collected her fifth win of the season after defeating Garrett 6-4, 6-3, and Oldham dropped her match to Kotseva 6-1, 6-2.
Arizona is back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. MST as they take on Loyola Marymount at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
