FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The 50th ranked Arizona women's tennis team defeated the Colorado State Rams by a final score of 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon up in Fort Collins, improving its overall record to 9-1 on the season.
The win marks the Wildcats' fifth win in a row and second-straight 7-0 sweep.
"The team played a good match today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We came in wanting to make a quick adjustment to playing indoors, and we did."
"We were nearly flawless at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in doubles today and our girls did a wonderful job competing for a point on each court in singles action too. Overall, it was a day to feel good about going into the weekend."
Arizona (9-1) began the match with a strong doubles showing. The Cats claimed the all-important doubles point with Briar Preston and Shayne Austin taking care of business on court one with a 6-0 win over Adriana Wojakowska and Aina Hernandez Soler, while Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrix followed suit, defeating the pair of Madison Porter and Laia Hernandez Soler 6-0 on court two to clinch the point.
The Wildcats' success continued into singles play, as Maker got things rolling with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win over Adriana Wojakowska from the No. 1 position. Preston kept the Cats' domination going, cruising to a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Laia Hernandez Soler on court two.
Arizona notched three more sweeps during the match with Laura Oldham taking down Aina Hernandez Soler 6-2, 6-2, Devin Chypyha defeating Maddie Buxton 6-2, 6-3, and Inge Hendrikx defeating Celine Voss 6-4, 6-3 on courts three, four, and six respectively. Austin completed the sweep for the Cats, beating Madison Porter in a tight 6-7, 6-1, 10-3 affair on court five.
With the win, Marker improved her overall record to 15-3 on the season, while she's posted an impressive 10-0 record from the No. 1 spot so far this season. Marker is also on a 10-match dual match win-streak after starting the season 5-3. Her stellar play has earned her a No. 113 national ranking.
Preston has also played well this season. She has posted a 12-3 overall record while going 9-1 from the No. 2 spot. She is now 10-1 in her last eleven matches, earning herself a national ranking of No. 97.
Arizona looks to stay hot, as it'll take on Colorado, Friday at 12:30pm PST in its first Pac-12 match of the year.
