No. 50 Arizona Handles Colorado in Conference Opener

BOULDER, Colo.--- The Wildcats cruised to their 10th win of the season and their fifth shutout victory of the year, as No. 50 Arizona swept Colorado 7-0, in its first conference match of the season, Friday afternoon in Boulder.

"The team did a fantastic job fighting today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We played solid in the doubles and we battled the close points well to sweep all the singles. I'm very proud of this group. Colorado is a tough place to play and leaving here with such a convincing win is a very good thing for us."

The Cats (10-1, 1-0 Pac-12) took control right from the very beginning, as Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha took down Vitaliya Alkhovik and Erin Strachan 8-1 on court three, while Shayne Austin and Briar Preston handily defeated Alex Aiello and Ashley Tefel 8-3 on court one to clinch the doubles point for Arizona.

With UA already leading 1-0, it kept the positive momentum rolling into singles action, as Inge Hendrikx (16-6, 9-2 Dual) dismantled Tiefel in straight sets on court six, 6-0, 6-2 to spot the Cats a 2-0 advantage.

Oldham (13-5, 7-3 Dual) continued her superb senior campaign, as she blew past Kyra Wojcik from the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-2 to put Arizona on the brink of victory, up 3-0.

Then it was Chypyha (13-5, 11-0 Dual) who finished things off for Arizona, as she stayed perfect in dual play, earning a 6-1, 6-4 win over Strachan on court four.

However, the Wildcats wouldn't let up, as Shayne Austin (11-8, 7-3 Dual) defeated Alkhovik in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 on court five to extend UA's lead to 5-0.

Then Preston (13-3, 10-1 Dual) and Marker (16-3, 11-0 Dual) took care of business on courts two and one respectively to clinch the sweep, as Preston defeated Aiello 7-6 (3), 6-4 and Marker finished off Nuria Ormeno Ruiz 4-6, 7-5 (10-7).

UA will try for its sixth straight victory when it takes on Utah, Sunday at 10 am PT in Salt Lake City.
