TUCSON, Ariz. – The 54th ranked Arizona women's tennis team defeated the NAU Lumberjacks 7-0 on Thursday, giving them a record of 8-1 on the season.
“It feels good to get a convincing win before heading into conference week,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “Getting the doubles point in quick fashion helped us get some momentum for singles. We wasted no time and got on the board fast. At the bottom of the lineup, we struggled with some inconsistency and that was our only downfall today. Fortunately, it didn't cost us any matches but we cannot afford to get streaky in our upcoming matches.”
It didn't take very long for the Wildcats to win the doubles point. The duos of Briar Preston/Shayne Austin and Lauren Marker/Inge Hendrikx both won their matches in convincing fashion 6-0. Marker/Hendrikx earned their team leading sixth win of the season while Preston/Austin won their fifth match of the season. Laura Oldham/Devin Chypyha were winning 5-1 when Arizona clinched the doubles point.
Singles were the same story for Arizona as each member won their respective matches. 115th ranked Marker took care of business once again as she won her match against Johanna Vang in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. This marks her ninth straight win to start the season all at the top spot in the lineup. Chypyha also won her ninth straight match by defeating Livia Hollosy 6-0, 7-6. The freshman has won five of her matches at the sixth spot and four of them at the fifth spot. Preston had the best day of any Wildcat as she did not lose one game all day. She beat Hailey Rochin 6-0, 6-0 for her eighth win of the season.
Oldham also had a good day as she defeated Emelia Box 6-0, 6-1 for her fifth win of the season all at the third spot in the lineup. Austin beat Marta Lewandowska in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 for her fifth win of the season. To round things out, Hendrikx won her match 6-4, 6-1. She had to come from behind in her first set as she started off down 4-1.
The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 11 as they head to Fort Collins, Colo. to take on Colorado State.
