SEATTLE, Wash. – The 45th-ranked Arizona women's tennis team (13-6/3-5 Pac-12) competed against No. 50 Washington on Friday, and the Huskies came out on top after defeating the Wildcats 6-1.
“This was definitely not a good day for us,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We know we are a better team than our performance today and we will recover. We will use tomorrow to regroup and get our minds ready for Oregon on Sunday”
The doubles point did not come easy for either team. Lauren Marker/Inge Hendrikx (9-8) fell to Lukac/Ysidora 8-1, but 23rd-ranked Briar Preston/Shayne Austin (12-4) came right back and defeated Douglas-Miron/Kobayashi 8-6. They have now won five of their last six doubles matches. It all came down to the match between Laura Oldham/Devin Chypyha (9-6) and Gregiore/Shimizu. Washington took the doubles point as Oldham/Chypyha lost a thriller 8-7.
The Huskies turned it on in singles play. No. 83 Preston (13-5) won her singles match against Ysidora 6-4, 2-6, 10-3, but that was it for Arizona. No. 54 Marker (15-4) was defeated by Douglas-Miron in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Chypyha (13-5) lost to Lukac 6-2, 6-3, Austin (9-9) fell to Gregoire 6-1, 6-1 and Hendrikx (12-6) was defeated by Shimizu 6-0 6-4. Oldham (9-9) dropped her match to Kobayashi 7-5, 5-0 and she retired in the second set.
Arizona is back in action on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. PT as they head to Eugene, Ore. to take on the 67th-ranked Oregon Ducks.
