TEMPE, Ariz. – The 53rd-ranked Arizona women's tennis team (13-8 overall/3-7 Pac-12) competed against the 26th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (15-7 overall/6-4 Pac-12) on Friday, and the Wildcats were defeated 7-0.
“Arizona State played a solid match,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We were right there with them, but when it came down to the big points, they were just a little tougher than us. While we didn't end the season the way we had hoped, I am very proud of my girls for giving it all they had all year long. We simply ran out of gas in the end, but we made huge strides along the way and we cannot forget that.”
It was Arizona State's day from the start as they were able to clinch the doubles point. Lauren Marker/Inge Hendrikx (9-10) fell to No. 53 Smith/Jump 8-4. The Sun Devils clinched the point after 28th-ranked doubles tandem Briar Preston/Shayne Austin (12-6) were defeated by No. 32 Krawczyk/Vlad 8-5. Laura Oldham/Devin Chypyha's (10-6) match went unfinished and it was tied at six points apiece when the match was called.
Singles play was the same story as Arizona State swept all six matches as well. Hendrikx (12-8) dropped her match to Ebony Panoho in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and Oldham (9-11) lost to Kassidy Jump 6-4, 6-1. The Sun Devils clinched the match after Austin (10-10) fell to No. 99 Leighann Sahagun 6-4, 7-5 and Chypyha (13-7) was beaten by Joanna Smith 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. To round it out, No. 94 Preston (14-6) was defeated by Stephanie Vlad in another three-set thriller 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 and No. 58 Marker (16-5) lost to 32nd-ranked Desirae Krawczyk 7-6, 6-3.
The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday, Apr. 23 as they travel to Ojai, Calif. to compete in the 2015 Pac-12 Championships.
