Los Angeles, Calif. – The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and women's track and field teams finished day one of the Pac-12 Championships Multis on Saturday in Los Angeles, Calif. UCLA is hosting the meet at their own Drake Stadium. After the first five events, redshirt junior Pau Tonnesen is in first place in the decathlon. Sophomore Alyssa Thompson is the top Wildcat, sitting in sixth place in the heptathlon through four events. The action will resume on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. MST.
Tonnesen is in first place after the first five events with 4,098 points. Tonnesen began the day with a personal-best time of 11.26 (0.0 wind), scoring 804 points. After fouling on his first two attempts, Tonnesen won the long jump competition with a mark of 23-6.75 (7.18m, -0.5 wind). That is the second-best mark of Tonnesen's career and scored 857 points. He then had a personal-best toss of 49-7.75 (15.13m) in the shot put, good for 798 points. Tonnesen had a personal-best clearance of 6-11 (2.11m) in the high jump, scoring 906 points. That mark is also tied for 33rd in the west region, meaning Tonnesen could compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries in the event should he stay in the top 48. Also, Tonnesen tied the decathlon single-event school record for the high jump with that clearance. Derek Huff also cleared 2.11m on March 12, 1988. Tonnesen then finished the day with a time of 51.81 in the 400-meter sprint.
Redshirt junior Harrison Ivie tallied 3,676 points after the first day of competition and he sits in ninth place. Ivie clocked a time of 11.27 in 100-meter dash and scored 801 points. Ivie scored 755 points in the long jump with his mark of 22-1.75 (6.75m, -0.9 wind). Ivie had a personal-best toss of 42-6.75 (12.97m) in the shot put, good for 665 points. He then cleared 6-2.75 (1.90m) in the high jump, good for 714 points. Ivie clocked a time of 51.63 in the 400-meter sprint, good for 741 points.
Thompson tallied 3,113 points and sits in sixth place after the first four events. Thompson scored 931 points in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.34. She cleared 5-2.25 (1.58m) in the high jump, tallying 712 points. She scored 555 points in the shot put with a toss of 34-1.25 (10.39m). In the 200-meter sprint, Thompson had a personal-best time of 24.69 (+1.6 wind) and scored 915 points. Tatum Souza of UCLA leads with 3,407 points.
Freshman Tiana Bonds finished the day in eighth place with 2,994 points. Bonds' time of 14.02 in the 100-meter hurdles was good for 976 points. Bonds cleared 5-2.25 (1.58m) in the high jump as well, good for 712 points. She then threw 30-5.5 (9.28m) in the shot put, adding 482 points to her tally. Bonds clocked a time of 25.70 (0.0 wind) in the 200-meter sprint which was good for 824 points.
