TUCSON, Ariz – Arizona was nothing short of dominant Friday on the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational, as it went a combined 13-3 on the day. Nine out of the ten Cats advanced to the second round of singles action, while two doubles tandems pushed their way to the semifinals out at the Ventana Golf and Racquet club.
Shoki Kasahara and Jason Jaruvang grinded out two victories in doubles play, defeating Gjoles-Anderson and Dela Torre from San Diego State 8-3 in the first round and T. Handel and F. Schumann from NAU 8-7 in the second round to earn their spot in the semifinals.
Newcomers, Oliver Plaskett and Harry Busby also saw success as a doubles tandem. The duo took down Baklini and Tran from New Mexico 8-6 and Taylor and Fischer from NAU 8-2, pushing them through to the semifinals.
The Wildcats continued their positive momentum in singles play. In the red draw, Jason Jaruvang got things started for the Cats with a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jeremy Lynn from Minnesota. Harry Busby then came through with a strong showing, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win over Tim Handel from NAU. Trent Botha continued Arizona's success with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Alex Santiago from University of San Francisco.
In the blue draw, Oliver Plaskett looked dominant, defeating Donovan Cellopica from New Mexico State, 6-0, 6-0. Trevor James followed with a hard-fought three-set victory over Raul Dela Torre from San Diego State by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Matt Dunn got things rolling for the Cats in the white draw with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Max Wightman from Mesa Junior College. Will Adkisson also had a strong outing with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Linus Holthey from Mesa Junior College. Will Kneale finished off the white draw for Arizona with a gritty 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Christian Brockstedt from San Francisco.
Arizona will get back after it tomorrow, as tournament play will resume with doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m. MST. UA has an opportunity to make it an all Wildcat doubles final with two wins tomorrow, while eight Cats will compete in the second round main draw singles play.
