Box Score Tucson, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats had their seven-game home winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon by No. 11 Stanford, falling to the Cardinal 59-34 in front of 1,491 fans at McKale Center.
LaBrittney Jones led the way for the Cats in their conference opener, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds in 30 minutes of action. She was 5 of 8 from the free throw line. Dejza James added six points and five rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Wildcats (9-4, 0-1 Pac-12) picked up their aggressiveness on defense in the second half, holding Stanford to just 4 of 18 shooting in the game's final 20 minutes. But Stanford's 39-15 lead at halftime was too much to overcome for Arizona.
“When you start out the game the way we did, it's hard to recover,” coach Niya Butts said. “Luckily, we were able to do some things defensively in the second half and were finally able to get it going a little offensively.”
Stanford (11-2, 1-0) was led by sophomore guard Brittany McPhee, who had 21 points in 26 minutes. Alanna Smith added 16 points and four rebounds. Both players came off the bench for Stanford.
The Cardinal built a lead right from the start of the game and jumped out to a 7-0 lead more than four minutes into the contest. James got the Wildcats on the board when she hit a jump shot off a pass from Lauren Evans. The Cats trimmed the lead to 11-5 when A'Shanti Coleman hit a jumper, but Stanford responded with a 9-3 run over the final two-plus minutes of the quarter to take a 20-8 lead after one.
The Cardinal extended the lead to 39-15 by halftime. Coach Tara VanDerveer's team outscored Arizona 18-6 in the paint in the first half and 26-8 off the bench. McPhee had 14 of her 21 in the first half to help the bench production.
In the second half, the Wildcats turned up the heat on defense Stanford wasn't able to hit its first field goal of the quarter until 2:29 left in the third when McPhee hit a 3-pointer from the corner. The Cardinal went just 2-11 from the floor in the third quarter, but the Wildcats weren't able to cut into the lead, also going 2-11 from the floor in the quarter.
The Wildcats outscored the Cardinal 12-9 in the final quarter to cut into the final deficit. Jones had five of her 11 in the fourth quarter.
“It's one of those games where the main thing is we have to stick together as a team and understand that this is one game, and although it didn't go the way we wanted it to, we can't lose sight of what we're trying to do this season,” Butts said.
The Wildcats will return to action Monday night at McKale center versus No. 19 Cal. Arizona will look to start a new winning streak on its home court after its seven-game streak dating back to last season was snapped Saturday.
“We have to be able to make plays; it's plain and simple,” Butts said. “We have to have a better effort defensively, but we also have to put the ball in the hole.
Tip-off for the Cal game is set for 8 p.m. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
