SEATTLE, Wash. - With both split squads in action today there was no shortage of excitement in New Mexico and Washington. There were plenty of highlights from day two in the Don Kirby Invite and the Husky Classic.
In New Mexico:
The Arizona women's 4x400 relay squad made up of Nnenya Hailey, Tatum Waggoner, Gia Trevisan, and Sage Watson broke the school record by posting a mark of 3:33.29. The previous record was 3:36.13 set four years ago in Seattle by Shapri Romero, Shale' Garland, Ariel Coleman, and Echos Blevins.
“It was one of those performances that you really want to see from your team going into the conference championship.” Head Coach Fred Harvey said. “Some of our people are starting to gear up and run at their best and that is what we really want. Not only are they running at their best but they are doing it against some really good competition. It was a great meet with Oregon here, Oklahoma, Houston, Stanford, and a number of great teams. For us to come in and they we stepped up was a great feeling.”
“With the school record in the 4x400, all the PRs that we had in the open 400, and you know Sage Watson didn't run one but that is her first race in a year. You couple that with Harrison making the finals in the high hurdles and it was really a great weekend for everyone”
Lizzie Smith again bested her top mark in the 800-meter and took a tenth of a second off lowering it to 2:08.26 which was enough to earn her a first place finish in the event.
