Cats Drop Close Game to Cougars on Senior Day

Box Score

Tucson, Ariz. – Washington State's Mariah Cooks completed a three-point play with 3.4 seconds left to lift the Cougars to a 62-61 win over Arizona on Sunday afternoon at McKale Center.

The Wildcats led 61-59 with five seconds left and fouled Washington State's Nike McClure. McClure missed both of her free throws, but Cooks corralled the rebound, put it back for two and was fouled by LaBrittney Jones. Cooks hit her free throw to give the Cougars a one-point lead. Arizona attempted a half-court shot, but it missed, giving Washington State the win.

The Wildcats led most of the fourth quarter after erasing a seven-point deficit at halftime and shot 46 percent in the second half to climb back in the game. Arizona also outrebounded Washington State 43-33 and blocked five Cougar shots. But Washington State was able to use Cooks' late-game play to pull out the win on Arizona's Senior Day.

“I want to give credit to Washington State for doing enough down the stretch to win that game,” coach Niya Butts said. “They forced us into 24 turnovers and forced 22 points off of those turnovers. We didn't do what we needed to do at the end of the game to win it.”

In her final game at McKale Center, Keyahndra Cannon played 30 minutes and had five points, four assists and four rebounds.

“Anytime you have a senior that's been with you all four years – through the ups, through the downs – you certainly have to appreciate that,” Butts said of Cannon. “I thought Key played hard today, unfortunately we came up short for her in our last game at McKale. I'm certainly going to miss her, and I wish her well.”

Leading 50-45 with 2:54 left in the third quarter, Washington State saw Arizona start cutting away at the lead. Malena Washington hit three straight free throws to make it a two-point game and Jones followed with a pair of her own to tie the game at 50 with 49 seconds left in the quarter. The Cats then forced a turnover and a missed shot on Washington State's final two possessions to enter the fourth quarter all knotted at 50.

After neither team could find the basket in the first two minutes of the quarter, Jones hit a jumper with 7:50 left to give Arizona its first lead of the game at 52-50. Breanna Workman then hit a layup to put the Cats up four and Washington followed with another layup to give Arizona a six-point lead.

The Cougars then scored the next six points to tie it at 56 with 3:13 to play. Arizona's lone senior, Cannon, then broke the tie on her Senior Day, scoring a layup to put the Cats up 58-56 with 3:07 to play.

After the two teams traded possessions, Jones hit a 3-pointer with 1:44 left to put the Wildcats up 61-56.

Washington State then went to the free throw line nine times over the final 1:14 and hit four of their attempts to secure the win.

For Arizona, Washington led the way with 14 points and five assists. Jones finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 26 minutes. She also had three steals. Workman finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes.

The Cougars shot 15 of 30 from the field in the first half to take a 26-29 lead over the Wildcats at the break. Arizona shot 40 percent, hitting 12 of 30 shots, and outrebounded Washington State 21-17. The Cats also registered nine assists on 12 made buckets in the opening half.

Workman led the way in the first with eight points. She hit 4 of 6 from the field and added three rebounds and a block. Taryn Griffey, playing in her second game back from a leave of absence, led the team with four rebounds and also hit a 3-pointer in the opening half.

Even with the loss, Cannon spoke highly of her time at Arizona after the game.

“It's a great place, great team, great coaches,” Cannon said. “I would say this is one of the best choices I've made in my life... I'm not focused on senior night. It's always tough to lose a game like that. I think we fought hard, but we just came up short.”

Arizona plays next on Friday at UCLA. Tip time is scheduled for 9 p.m., MST and will be televised by Pac-12 Arizona.
