Tonnesen Blasts Personal Record in Pole Vault on Day One

SEATTLE, Wash. – Arizona was in full action Friday as they took on the MPSF Championships at University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle, Washington.

Pau Tonnesen competed in the pole vault and set a major personal record with a mark of 18 feet and 1.75 inches (5.53m). Pau also qualified for the 60-meter hurdle final tomorrow by placing seventh and posting his second-best career mark at 8.15 seconds.

“Pau is such a competitor.” Head Coach Fred Harvey said, “I was speaking to some of the reporters out there on the track and one of the things that stuck out was that he had three PRs leading up to that. Last year at the NCAA Championships an athlete had eight out of ten PRs to almost win the national title. That's the type of competitor that Pau is. He gets your team fired up, he is always up for the challenge in front of him and that was definitely the highlight of our day.

Nnenya Hailey and Traci Hicks both qualified for the 60-meter hurdle final tomorrow in a competitive field Friday. Hailey came in fourth place posting a mark of 8.30 seconds. Traci Hicks would finish in seventh place at 8.57 seconds. The final will take place around 12:30 pm MT tomorrow.

Harrison Ivie ended day one of the heptathlon in eighth place. Ivie was consistent throughout the day as he finished in the top-10 in every event.

Alyssa Thompson finished seventh in the women's pentathlon today. Her best event came in the long jump where she placed second with a mark of 19 feet and 7.5 inches (5.98m). She also set a personal record in the shot put with a mark of 35 feet and 8.5 inches (10.88m).

Avery Mickens was strong again in the long jump as he posted his second-best career mark at 24 feet and 1 inch (7.34m) for a 4th place finish.

Tatum Waggoner finished 12th in the women's 200-meter race. She posted a mark of 24.47 seconds.

Blake Eichler posted a mark of 21.84 seconds in the men's 200-meter race. That time was good enough for a seventh place finish.

Arizona had women's squad competing in the distance medley relays today consisting of Claire Green, Jasper Gray, Katelin Warren, and McKenna Gaffney. They finished eighth posting a mark of 11:47.72.
