Birmingham, Ala. – Pau Tonnesen (heptathlon) and the women's 4x400-meter relay team earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships today in Birmingham, Alabama.
Tonnesen again broke his personal and school record with a score of 6,027 points in the heptathlon. He will leave Alabama with first-team All-America honors in the heptathlon, and second-team honors in the pole vault.
“It is nice to be able to come to a meet, we have a certain number of bullets so to speak, and we hit on all of them.” Head Coach Fred Harvey said. “We thought Pau would be in a position to win, which he was and ended up second which was great.”
The women's 4x400-meter relay squad earned first-team All-America honors by finishing eighth with their second-best mark of the year at 3:32.78. The elite relay team was made up of Tatum Waggoner, Nnenya Hailey, Gia Trevisan and Sage Watson.
All relay teams that competed today broke the Birmingham Indoor Crossplex Facility record at 3:34.36.
“The 4x400 women's team came in and competed really hard and ran really close to their indoor school record.” Coach Harvey said.
“This is the greatest meet in the country, so for them to come here and run the way they did was great to see. Especially with two of them, Tatum and Gia, who have never been to a national championship.”
Here are how the remaining heptathlon events for Tonnesen went today:
Tonnesen began the day with the 60-meter hurdles where he posted a mark of 8.24 seconds, moving him from fourth to fifth in the heptathlon standings.
Following that was his performance in the pole vault where he posted a mark of 17 ft - 4.5 in. (5.30m), moving him to third place in the standings.
He finished his climb in the standings by running a 2:48.29 in the 1,000-meter taking him to the personal and school record, while also moving him into second place overall.
With the indoor season complete, Arizona looks to start the outdoor season strong at their own home of Roy P. Drachman Stadium for the Willie Williams Classic beginning on March 18th.
